BACKSTAGE PASS
WITH
SWITCHES
Switches, an English rock band that has
stormed the American Rock-n-Roll scene.
The band described their music as a
"Glammy Weezer" but they are so much
more than that. Their harmonies and the
fact that they fit so well together as a band
had the crowd rockin' out to their music.
Switches harmonies do stand out. Ollie
said, "We like to do a lot of harmony with
elaborate vocal parts." Matt, the lead singer
said, " Our music is rock-n-roll with unex-
pected changes" The crowd was impressed
how well these guys could rock-n-roll. They
packed in the front of the stage to catch
the bands vibe. Everyone was excited by
their music and Lay Down The Law and
Drama Queen really had everyone switch
gears to party. I spoke with all of them
before the show. They credited their love
of music and their inspiration to become
musicians to their Dads record collection.
Matt had listened to David Bowie and T-
Rex growing up while Thom's influences
were quite different with Gilbert and
Sullivan and Mantovani. The broad spec-
trum of musical influences blend together
to make Switches sound so unique. Matt writes all of their
songs with input from the rest of the band. He took
guitar lessons as a child and even had a guitar made
for him. His love of music was evident because during
the interview he was playing the guitar very softly. I
felt as though I was witnessing his creative process.
They did spend a lot of time creating their CD in Los
Angeles. Ollie said, "The key to everything is working
with great people. If you get on really well with your pro-
ducer you can realize your vision". Thom said," When you
are in studio and finish a song, it rocks actually." They like
playing shows in America. They said the audiences are
very energetic. Thom said, " When the crowd likes you
it is quite rewarding." When this tour is over they will be
back to LA to make their first video. Their director's vision
for the video has it revolving around an air to sea battle.
Their first single Lay Down The Law has already made
it's way into the soundtrack for the blockbuster movie,
Jumper. That is an amazing accomplishment for them.
Their CD will be released in March under Interscope.
